USB standard USB stands for: Universal Serial Bus. This is a standard for connecting peripheral equipment to computers. USB replaces the slower parallel and serial ports, primarily because the speed of data transfer with USB is much faster.
The standard was invented by Intel, which introduced protocol version 1.0 in 1996. By means of the standardised USB port, from that time onwards hardware manufacturers have been able to make products that are compatible with computers.
USB as a power source An additional advantage of USB is that IT can act as the power source for the connected peripheral equipment. The connected device can be supplied with power through the USB cable.
USB 2.0 supplies a maximum of 500 mA (at 5V). That is sufficient for simple devices, such as a mouse. Devices that require more power have to have their own supply.
Properties of USB A few properties of USB are:
- The computer is the host.
- USB cables may be no longer than 5 metres (for distances up to 30 metres, a line of hubs can be connected together).
- USB devices can be connected without having to restart the computer and function immediately after being connected (hot-pluggable).
USB variants There are four USB variants:
-
USB 1.0: 1.5 Mbit/s (low speed)
-
USB 1.1: 12 Mbit/s (full speed)
-
USB 2.0: 480 Mbit/s (high speed)
-
USB 3.0: 4.8 Gbit/s (super speed).
The USB 3.0 variant has a plug with extra connections to enable the high speed to be reached. The extra connections are incorporated in the plug in such a way that older plugs also still fit. The USB 3.0 cable has 10 wires instead of the 4 wires in the old cable.
USB Implementers Forum The USB Implementers Forum is a non-profit organisation that was formed by a group of companies that developed the Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification. This organisation has been set up to promote and use the Universal Serial Bus (USB) technology. For more information about the USB Implementers Forum: www.usb.org.
